10 Spiciest Takes on Bipartisan Katie

Arizona’s Dem governor wants a Republican BFF on the ballot, and everyone is screaming in different directions.

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs is reportedly set to pick Republican ex - Mesa mayor John Giles as her running mate in her brutal re‑election fight. It is the first time Arizonans will vote for a governor and lieutenant governor together, and Hobbs is betting a never‑Trump, Kamala‑endorsing Republican will save her with moderates and independents. The internet is split between calling it genius, betrayal, or pure panic.

  1. Mild: This is boring grown‑up politics, which is exactly the point.

Katie Hobbs is basically cosplaying “functional government” for independent voters. She is saying, I am not left Twitter, I am a suburban HOA.

  1. Mild‑Warm: It is a smart move that looks dumber the more you explain it.

Picking a Republican running mate is elite‑brain “bipartisan” fanfic for cable news panels. Normal people hear “Republican” and think abortion bans, not trends in Mesa civic leadership.

  1. Medium: This is just vibes laundering for nervous moderates.

Hobbs is renting a white male Republican to reassure skittish suburban voters she is safe to vote for. Consultants told her, borrow a McCain cosplay, win the Karen primary.

  1. Spicy: Democrats screaming “betrayal” forgot how coalition politics works.

If your whole brand is “big tent,” sometimes you invite a Republican under the tent flap. Progressives hate it, but Arizona is purple, not a group chat.

  1. Hot: This is less “bold bipartisanship,” more “oh no Andy Biggs is actually scary.”

The running mate choice is a flashing neon sign that Hobbs thinks Biggs can beat her. You do not pick a GOP buddy if you are cruising, you do it when polls make your staff drink.

  1. Glowing Hot: The real loser here is the word “Republican.”

When your Republican lieutenant governor backed Kamala Harris, the party label is basically performance art. Giles is GOP the way your grandpa is “still a Democrat” because he voted for Carter.

  1. Scorching: This is a silent referendum on the Trump GOP, disguised as ticket‑balancing.

Hobbs is betting Arizona will reward the anti‑Trump Republican and punish the Trump‑endorsed one. If she wins, consultants will call it a “new coalition,” and the RNC will call it “betrayal.”

  1. Inferno: Democrats keep trying to fix extremism with aesthetics instead of power.

Swapping in a moderate Republican sidekick is cosmetic surgery on a gunshot wound. The problem is Biggs and his movement, not Hobbs’s vibe, and certainly not Mesa’s brand.

  1. Nuclear‑Adjacent: If this works, parties are just logos and vibes, not teams you stay loyal to.

A Democrat governor plus a Republican lieutenant governor is the soft launch of post‑party politics. If voters like it, 2030 is going to be nothing but “unity tickets” and chaos.

  1. Nuclear: This is how you accidentally normalize the idea that Democrats need Republican permission to govern.

Putting a Republican on the ticket says loud and clear: one party alone is not legitimate anymore. If the only acceptable Democrat is flanked by a GOP chaperone, the right already won the frame.
