Hi everyone,
Happy Tuesday!
This is an experiment. It might not work. I’m going to try anyway.
I’ve been wanting a creative way to share links, quotes, books, etc., that I’ve come across and loved.
A short, weekly newsletter could be a good project to get in the habit of curating and writing instead of simply consuming content.
As Seneca said:
“There is no enjoying the possession of anything valuable unless one has someone to share it with.”
It’s the same reason I feel joy sending hilarious TikToks or new favorite songs to friends I suspect will vibe with them
So, welcome to Trove, what I’m calling this weekly collection of finds.
Here’s your first batch of recommendations:
Quote: Iris Murdoch on learning a foreign language
“If I am learning, for instance, Russian, I am confronted by an authoritative structure which commands my respect. The task is difficult and the goal is distant and perhaps never entirely attainable. My work is a progressive revelation of something which exists independently of me. Attention is rewarded by a knowledge of reality. Love of Russian leads me away from myself towards something alien to me, something which my consciousness cannot take over, swallow up, deny or make unreal.”
This is from a chapter about how human agency and creativity benefit from constraints, from the book Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work
by Matthew B. Crawford.
More quotes here.
Music:Big Red Machine - Phoenix
Two of my favorite voices in indie/folk collaborating on this song. The piano melody and chorus are stuck in my head lately.

Article:OVER A THOUSAND YEARS OF SERVICE: JAPAN’S OLDEST BUSINESSES REIGN SUPREME(LY OLD)
I haven’t yet traveled to Yamanashi prefecture, but it’s home to a 1000-year-old hot spring inn-onsen in Japanese-featured in this article that’s nestled riverside in a secluded mountain town.
Thanks for reading this first batch. See you next week.
