Brooklyn Diasporist News from Zach Barocas
Hello and thank you for subscribing to my newsletter!
You might notice I'm trying a different email platform. I can't remember how I came across Buttondown but it has some nerdish features I like and is also run by someone named Justin, whose commitment to providing an open and honest service is laudable. If you want to know more about why I've chosen this platform, feel free to drop me a line.
§ Item 1: I posted about it at the blog but it seems worth repeating if only for my own edification: I've undertaken to buy no new records this calendar year. The fact is, I've got to roll some of my spending back for the time being, and coupled with a feeling that I should know my own collection better, I decided to listen to one record a day in 2023. This goal already functions according to averages, as some days I haven't had the simultaneous time and attention span to put something on. Such days are followed by double- or even triple-play days to bring the total up to parity. In any case, I'm posting a snapshot of each play at the blog and my social feeds. Monthly playlists will go up on Apple Music at each month's end. Here's January and February.
§ Item 2:
I'm currently at work on composing New Freedom Sound pieces. As you can see from the screenshot above, it can get hectic, but soon after it looks like this there is a moment of near-coalescence followed by sending it off to J. for mixing. I'll have updates as the situation develops. In the meantime, please enjoy this cool picture of multi-instrumentalist Mark Cisneros.
§ Item 3:Arctic Rodeo Recordings is releasing Jawbox’s Revisionist EP on vinyl in several colors. Pre-orders open on March 4. Best bet is to follow them on Instagram for updates.
§ Item 4: This Friday is another Bandcamp Friday. For the uninitiated, this means that Bandcamp waives all of its fees for the whole day and the money from anything you purchase there goes entirely to the artists. So if you’re inclined to support any of my music, you might visit The Up On In, BELLS≥, The E. Fowlkes Sextet, Jawbox, or New Freedom Sound that day. If you’ve already done so, thanks for the support.
§ Item 5: Imagination, in the end, is what distinguishes one creation from another. -- Om Malik
