I'm having surgery tomorrow (minor, getting the cyst in my pinky fixed up) so I'm honestly too frazzled to write anything useful. But I do have some things I want you to know about, so:
I wrote about a fishmonger & chef named Brandon Gray for the LA Times! Brandon worked as a Navy cook, went to culinary school, moved to Australia on a whim, and now smokes & cures some of the best sustainable seafood in Los Angeles. I really love doing these small-ish profiles for the Times-- I've written previously about a young female butcher named Katie Flannery, as well as one on a chef named Charlie Negrete and his history with addiction and fine dining, and I have one on deck for early May that I'm very amped about. A lot of freelancing is anxiety-provoking and/or a true, true drag, so finding this little regular-ish niche for myself has been really lovely and rewarding.
I also have a piece in the LA Review of Books' Humor issue! They asked me to write about something I'm obsessed with, so obviously my piece is entitled HEARTTHROBS. It's not online but it is in print! Which reminds me that the Times piece will be in print this Saturday if you live in LA and still get the paper.
Come find me in person! I'm teaching Young Adult Fiction for Writing Workshops LA this spring, but there are tons of other classes and seminars on offer if that's not what you're into. Highly recommend taking a class if you're thinking about writing at all. It's such a good community, and I feel lucky to be a part of it.
Finally, I'll be on a panel at the LA Times Festival of Books on Sunday, April 22! Probably I won't still have a splint on my hand, but maybe not! Who knows! Life is a journey and an adventure!
See you on the other side of this particular one,
Zan
