murder

I interviewed the author of a new book about Charles Manson and the summer of 1969 for Longreads. I am, in general, deeply over treating serial killers like kitschy cultural artifacts (loving true crime isn't a personality!!!!!! But neither is hating it, so we're both fucked if that helps). Anyway, trust me when I say: this book is a whole entire trip. I had no idea what to make of it, or what it ultimately, like, means, but that was part of the pleasure in reading it: interacting with something that was so totally unsettled and uncertain, that aimed mostly to unsettle me.

Related, kind of: I'm writing a profile of self-help author Mark Manson, and I'd love to hear your opinions on his books if you've read them. He seems very certain that he knows how we should live-- did his advice resonate with you? If so (or if not), I'd love to hear about it.

Last book thing: my next one, LOOK, comes out in March 2020, and Francesca Lia fucking Block had some nice things to say about it:
