for free?

"Especially in the internet era, where publications field underfunded freelance “staffs” and personal-project bloggers are in impossible abundance, writers have had to insist vocally and persistently on the professional and economic value of what we do. But that also hasn’t stopped us from simultaneously making space to do it for free, for ourselves."

That's from a piece I did for LitHub on why I love getting to write this Tinyletter so much! Pairs nicely with this Ann Friedman essay on Why Not Ever Hobby Is A Side Hustle. And also reminds me that PayPal won't let me respond to the messages people sometimes send when they send me money, but I read & love them so much. Hi, guys. There are many kinds of value & compensation in this world; thanks for reminding me of that.

Also this week: I wrote about a woman who's a third generation butcher for The LA Times.

& if you can't give money to me or anyone, maybe consider some blood? Ann & her podcast witch (and one of my dearest friends) Gina are organizing a blood drive this spring.

This thing has been really sticking with me form this piece yesterday. It's ostensibly about American manufacturing, but also how we can't solve all of the problems, or sometimes even all of one of them, but we can start to solve one part, and that's something, too.

this tinyletter is free, but equally tiny donations are always accepted and appreciated.
