Five Finds: Rome's Industry and Horses

Why Rome Never Industrialized

Rome lacked not machinery but the cultural and economic conditions that let ideas and engineering reinforce each other.

I specifically liked the comparison of theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge. Romans were fantastic engineers: they built roads, aqueducts, and temples. But have you ever heard about a Roman mathematician? No, they were all Greeks.

Romans knew how to build things that don’t crumble, but they never bothered to figure out why.

Paracetamol vs Ibuprofen

Paracetamol and ibuprofen are just pills you take when you have a fever or pain. But they aren’t the same.

I once heard that paracetamol is dangerous. If you take eight grams, your liver could fail, and you die.

Turns out, it’s still the safer option. As long as you stay within the approved dosage. Meanwhile, ibuprofen affects multiple things across your body at any dose.

The fun part: nobody still knows WHY paracetamol works. But unlike ibuprofen, it only affects your brain.

This Alberta Startup Sells No-Tech Tractors for Half Price

An Alberta company is selling stripped-back tractors with remanufactured mechanical diesel engines and no electronics. Who buys it? Farmers are tired of locked-down software and dealer dependency. Old tech is new again. Also, it’s half the cost of John Deere.

Early horse domestication failed spectacularly

A freak combo of two gene changes accidentally created the horse that could tolerate us. That single calm, strong‑backed bloodline exploded out of the Volga–Don steppes 4,200 years ago, domesticated by the Yamnaya culture, wiped out every other horse lineage, and rewired history.

P.S. I always liked how they call it the Yamnaya culture in English. Sounds exotic, when in Russian it just means “a hole in the ground”.

The DMZ's hidden fortress and accidental nature preserve

Everybody knows that famous photo of the dark North Korea. But you can also see the Korean Demilitarized Zone (which is actually filled with all the weapons you can think of).

Bonus: Which Year

You get 5 photos and must guess the year when each was taken. I’m playing it every day now.
