Shrek is Love, Shrek is Life

This weekend was a bit more eventful than the others. I went to the lab yesterday, and found a cardboard box on my desk. The sender's address was from the UK, and I wondered momentarily about who would send me a package from London. I soon remembered that I had asked Braxton if he could ask his friend in the UK to buy a Shrek mug for me from a store that only has a physical presence in the UK. And so, it had finally arrived:

After a nice clean inside and out, Shrek was ready to drink out of. The placement of his ears makes it a bit awkward for me to get my mouth around the rim, but the free-flow of coffee is oh-so-sweet. It turns out (I measured today) that Shrek holds well over half a litre of fluid. What this means for my coffee consumption is yet unknown. What I do know, however – is how useful Shrek is going to be when I'm getting coffee around campus. UBC shops (although not strictly within the bounds of the City of Vancouver) charge 25c for a take-out cup of coffee. I can't wait to plop Shrek down on the counter for a nice brew. After all, there's no reason for me to keep the joy of Shrek confined to the windowless bounds of the Software Practices Lab.

Speaking of the SPL, I've noticed that I've been spending most of my waking hours in the lab. This probably isn't healthy, but habits die hard. Looking a bit toward the future, I wonder how jarring of a transition it will be once (if?) I graduate in the fall. I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

After I discovered my Shrek mug and worked on some non-research code for a while, I hopped on the bus and made my way to Coquitlam. The only time I go to Coquitlam is for a haircut (hasn't happened in months, my long hair is evidence of this), or when I get a craving for some Korean food. I could get Korean food at any number of the H-Marts around Vancouver (there's even a Korean food court in the downtown H-Mart that serves some decent food), but the one in Coquitlam has more variety. I go to the one in Henderson Place Mall, which is listed as a "Chinese-themed" mall, whatever that means. The trek to Coquitlam isn't a short one by any means, but at least it keeps me out of the lab for some time.

Friday was also grad visit day for the department. It was interesting to see some of the new prospective grads this year, although it appeared to be markedly less chatty/boisterous this year. My own visit days two years ago seem like a lifetime away. I gave my UDLS on the history of the rickroll again. I feel a bit guilty for letting the UDLS fall by the wayside, but I've got enough shit to do right now as it is.

Today I went to the lab again, and worked on some more open-source code. This time, I managed to get my code from last weekend correctly compiling. It turns out that my code was correct, but I had just forgotten to import the implicit entities into scope. The error message wasn't helpful at all, but I think implicits are something that are fixed (or otherwise reworked) in Scala 3.
