Druk
I’m writing another newsletter from the lab. The weather outside is amazing; it’s not raining at all, and for Vancouver, that’s saying something. I guess I could be going on a walk, or doing something that would let me enjoy this rare blip of nice weather, but there’s a lot to do.
Here’s the list of things that I compiled on Friday that I needed to get done relatively quickly (in no particular order):
- Polish up the related work section of my thesis for Gail to take a second read.
- Start writing a design/research doc for my collaborators at JetBrains.
- Prepare a presentation on the TAs who were nominated for the Killam Teaching Assistant award for a meeting on Wednesday.
- Polish up the hover interaction feature I have for IntelliJ.
It’s 3:21pm on Sunday, and where’s what that same list looks like:

This is with about an hour’s worth of Pokemon played. I guess this is pretty decent, but now I’m dreading having to come in tomorrow (Monday). In retrospect, I’m not sure how useful coming in today and yesterday was. It’s true that I got stuff done, but would I have gotten this done anyway during the week? Was it worth sacrificing most of my weekend to get ahead a little bit on these tasks? I guess it’s a bit too late now to think about this, and I should really stop navel-gazing so much.
Last night I watched Druk, a film about a group of high-school teachers in Denmark who decide to maintain a BAC of 0.05 as an experiment. I remembered watching trailers for this in the before-time, and I made a mental note to watch it when I got the chance. The film’s dialogue was entirely in Danish, so naturally I had to rely on subtitles. I would say its a pretty good film, and depicts the sensation of being inebriated almost a little too well. It helps that Mads Mikkelsen is always a pleasure to watch.
Maybe I’ll make some time to play Pokemon sometime today, before the week starts again tomorrow.
