Dim Sum

Last week, I helped organize a dim sum lunch (brunch?) with some folks from the lab. “Helped organize” might be a bit of a stretch, since I basically took on dictatorial powers to decide a time + place and send invites to folks who were interested. I ultimately think this was a pragmatic solution, since organizing on Slack can be a bit of a pain. My apologizes to any lab members whose Saturday began earlier than desired.

We went to Western Lake on Victoria Drive. I think there was talk of going to a place in Richmond, but I thought that would be a bit too far away for most folks. I had only been there once before, but I remembered the food there being pretty good. Eric’s partner was (understandably) disappointed that there was no push cart for Dim Sum, but to my understanding, this isn’t a super common phenomenon anymore. I do remember going to Kam Ding back when I lived in Coquitlam; they had push carts. The food at Western Lake was pretty great. I have to admit that I felt a tinge of fear when I saw the table absolutely covered with the food we had ordered; I felt there was absolutely no way we could finish it.

Luckily, it looked like everyone came hungry, since we made quick work of the food. A standout was the congee, which came in what I would describe as a cavernous bowl. It had shredded chicken, and what I recognized as century egg. I’m a big fan of soup in general, and the congee was not a disappointment.

After eating, I made my way to the lab at UBC. I didn’t work on my thesis, but worked more on some open-source projects. I feel some guilt when I do non-thesis related programming (since my thesis involves a lot of programming that I could be getting ahead on). That said, I try to realize that this is no different from me indulging in a hobby, or something that I do to unwind.

Today, I went to the bookstore to see if I could get a copy of Pachinko, but it looks like a lot of people had the same idea over the previous week. The store was sold out of all its copies, and the closest store that had any was in Surrey. I think I’ll see if the bookstore at UBC has any next week, which will inevitably lead to me asking myself whether I want to give the university any more money.

See you next time!
