Coming Up Next
I honestly can’t tell you what happened earlier this week, because I don’t really remember much of it. But let’s take a look at my calendar and see what exactly I did:
Not really much. I met with a a friend for a drink on Thursday. Maybe this year is the year when I finally feel “old” for real, because I don’t remember a single pint of beer being that strong.
Some folks from the lab went to the opera on Friday, but I didn’t go. Partly because I expended most of my social currency in meeting with that friend on Thursday, but also because I just wanted to have a quieter Friday night. At the end of my uneventful Friday night, my glasses ended up breaking. This was slightly disappointing. I’m usually quite good with glasses; I wore a pair for 10 years before I got a new pair around 3 years ago. Luckily, I had a backup pair of glasses because otherwise, I’d really be screwed.
This upcoming week is shaping up to be pretty busy. Tomorrow, I have a call with a grad student from CMU. I contacted them in the middle of January because I wanted to get a preprint of their CHI paper, and somehow we ended up agreeing to chat about research and what we’re working on. Of course, this meant I had to read their paper again to make sure I had something non-idiotic to say tomorrow so some part of today was spent reading.
On Wednesday, I have a call with Tim (and some new folks) from JetBrains. The cool thing about having collaborators (can I even call them that, yet?) is you feel like you’re not super alone when you’re doing research. The not-so-cool thing about having collaborators in a continent across the world is waking up for early meetings. For this meeting, I think I’m gonna have some more mockups in Keynote ready to go. If I’m really feeling ambitious, maybe I’ll even have some small stuff done in IntelliJ.
Scattered throughout this week will be some thesis-writing. I’ve got a good idea of how the related work is going to be carved out, so it’ll be good to go to town on the parts that I can really hash out. Speaking of “hashing things out,” I have to read the paper for tomorrow’s reading group: “Hashing It Out: A Survey of Programmers’ Cannabis Usage, Perception, and Motivation.” This should be a fun one.
That’s it for now, maybe I’ll have something more exciting to write about next week after all these things happen.
