rooftops and readings
Adventurous readers,
Here in the more-northerly latitudes of the northern hemisphere, spring is running at full tilt; our baby cherry tree is leafing out and the robins are chasing each other. I have news for you about New York, Washington, DC, and bookstores around North America (maybe around the world?).
A New York reading
A couple of weeks ago in New York City, it was still cold. I bundled up in scarf and gloves to enjoy a post-reading rooftop view:
You can see photos from the KGB reading here:

Photos from April 9th, with Andrea Hairston & Ursula Witcher – Fantastic Fiction at KGB
Here are Ellen's and Matt and David's photos from this month's Fantastic Fiction at KGB readings with guests Andrea Hairston & Ursula Witcher. Both read from their work to another full house.
I'll let you all know when the podcast audio is available!
Events in DC
In less cheerful news, MAA Focus has reprinted my essay about my friend Adriana's challenges at the NSF, with a postscript on more recent events. If you'd like to investigate grants that the NSF has recently been forced to cancel, there's a searchable database here.
Adriana and I are planning to catch up with math (and possibly Murderbot) at the end of May. I'm going to meet up with my publisher, too! I'll read some poems (including some Nakharat poems) at the MLK Jr. library in DC on the final Saturday of May:
A Gathering of Pride: Queer Poetry Marathon & Bookfair
- Date: 5/31/25
- Location: Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library (901 G St NW, Washington, DC 20001) Fifth Floor lobby, overlooking the roof garden
- Time: 1-2 PM
Indie Bookstore Day
This Saturday is Independent Bookstore Day:

Stores around North America are hosting celebrations. Schuler Books in Ann Arbor, Little District Books in Washington, DC, and Bakka Phoenix in Toronto all have North Continent Ribbon in stock if you want to drop by--and I'm sure your own local bookstore would be delighted to order it.
Gennoveus finds proximity to books extremely restful:
Yours,
Ursula.
