covers and kickstarts
Intrepid readers,
It's a week full of news involving the planet of Nakharat. My story collection North Continent Ribbon is seeming ever more real. Yoon Ha Lee shared the glorious cover by Danielle Taphanel yesterday. Here's a snippet to whet your appetite:
For the full cover and an interview with me, including a discussion of which Nakharat story would make the best opera and a bonus cat picture, head over to Yoon's newsletter.
North Continent Ribbon is part of Neon Hemlock's 2024 novella series. The Kickstarter for the series goes live March 1--it's a fascinating assembly of moods and universes!--and you can sign up for a reminder if you want to pounce as soon as you can.
Meanwhile, my novelette "The Fifteenth Saint" is a finalist for Asimov's Readers' Award, and they've posted all the finalists on their site. "Fifteenth Saint" has a nearly-magic book, extremely creepy buses, and the particular catharsis of quitting a terrible committee. It's impossible to choose a favorite story, but the hero of "Fifteenth Saint" is very dear to my heart.
I'm sending you all this news from the Pacific Northwest, which is very nearly as impossibly green as Danielle Taphanel's art. My parents' cat Fujin posed for me:
He is a beautiful and wily beast.
I met an old friend at the (impressively renovated) Burke Museum, where we learned about Miocene sea bears and compared notes on editing careers. Behold a mastodon:
I'm hoping to catch Cat Farris in full-on comic artist mode (and alert her about the Miocene bears) before heading back to the Midwest!
Yours,
Ursula.
