I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm [Yesking Remix] - Billie Holiday
An extremely toasty dub remix of another seasonal (though not particularly Christmas-related) classic.
I’m generally in the “off with my overcoat” camp; I just don’t seem to get cold very easily. Earlier this week, a friend was telling me that people can earn points with her if they have blankets lying around their living rooms. She thinks “own throw blankets” belongs on lists like Steps Every Girl Can Take to Get a Girl to Sleep Over along with more traditional entries like “stock up on contact solution”. This would not have occurred to me! Are girls often so cold that they would leave a house for lack of a blanket?
Maybe! One perspective shift I’ve had over the past year is that quite often it’s not that people have different preferences, it’s that they are having different experiences.
Maybe everyone likes to feel roughly the same level of comfortable warmth, but body temperature varies a lot between individuals, so some need more blankets than others. When my boyfriend visited Toronto this fall, we ended up buying an additional blanket for his feet, and this is probably because he is taller than me and was experiencing genuinely colder extremities, not because he likes to be especially warm.
If anything, evidence suggests that I like being especially warm, given that I am a notoriously aggressive sleep-cuddler. It’s a bit funny to have a totally involuntary idiosyncrasy; I had heard this was true, and asked the aforementioned boyfriend to confirm. He said something like, “if you are a 10 on that scale, all of my other partners are a 4 or a 5”. What! It’s strange to be a distinctive outlier about something that happens while I’m unconscious.
Hoping you can adjust your environment to suit your experiences,
- Tessa
