Santa Claus is Coming to Town - Ella Fitzgerald
Ella Fitzgerald starts off the myth of
omnipotent santa (almost an inverse of yesterday's) with a conspiratorial introduction which I've not heard in any other version:
I just came from a lovely trip along the milky way
I stopped off at the North Pole to spend a holiday
I called on dear old Santa Claus to see what I could see
He took me to his workshop and told his plans to me
So you better watch out
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town has always been one of the creepier carols
- he sees you when you're sleeping- and I like that this rendition doesn't hide that this is fundamentally a warning
- big daddy's watching!- under any
present-anticipating jubilation.
