We Have Slipped Somewhere

“Bravo!” Deschamps said as the team boarded their plane in a thrown-rice flurry of applause. “Morrocco is done!”

Olise stayed quiet amongst the applause and looked to his right. A child in an orange jumpsuit. Handcuffed. Clear plastic ties. His wrists in his lap.

Olise looked around as the team continued to celebrate and leaned over to the child.

“You okay, mate?” He whispered.

The child looked up. “Voy a llegar tarde a la escuela?”

Olise’s Spanish wasn’t that great. “Una vez más?” He asked, leaning even closer. The child repeated the question in a whisper.

“Mon frere,” Olise said, leaning back up and turning to Dembélé. “Est-ce qu'on s'est trompés de vol?”

Mbappe turned in his seat and looked back at the pair. “J’ai téléphoné à mon contact et je lui ai demandé de me procurer un avion. Quel est le problème?”

Michael Olise looked up and around to try and get a better sense of the aircraft. He spotted a brand name on the luggage compartment. Had he ever heard of a GlobalX plane before?

“Je pense que quelque chose ne va pas,” Olise said, half to himself, “mais je n'arrive pas à l'exprimer.”
