what is the anchor point of your career?

Dealing with Difficult People

7. What is most important to you in your career?

This one I'd forgotten about entirely, again from Executive Blueprint. In figuring out what to work on next, you're looking for something that's well aligned with your values. There are lots of surveys you can take to try and work out what is important to you, but this set of values is particularly work / career focused.

You can fill in this survey to get a sense of which of the Schein goals is your anchor.

The anchors are:

  • technical and functional competence

  • general managerial competence

  • autonomy and independence

  • security and stability

  • entrepreneurial creativity

  • service and dedication to a cause

  • pure challenge

  • lifestyle

Have a think about which one you think might be your anchor, and then take the survey to see how well you know your own priorities. There's also this survey tool that might help you think through how well aligned your current job is to your anchors: maybe that's why you're either extremely happy or unhappy in your current role?

How did you go with the survey? Hit reply to tell me what your career anchor is?

David.

Work. Study. Dad.
