making better decisions - 1. introduction
Dealing with Difficult People
I’ve been thinking for a while about the process of making decisions.
A decision is any situation where we need to select between two or more options. Depending on the situation, the criteria for a favourable or an unfavourable outcome might be different.
By studying a range of frameworks, we can increase the number of methods we have for reaching a favourable outcome.
I’ve been stuck in an analysis cycle with this list of frameworks, so I thought I’d send it out into the world for some accountability to write about it.
In the course of studying at business school, we learned a lot about decision making, and especially a lot of frameworks. I hope this ongoing discussion is something you find helpful, and you can see how it might be relevant to the decisions you face.
Here are some frameworks that I’m aiming to talk through:
- Introduction (this email)
- Magic 8-ball
- Tossing a Coin
- Pros and Cons
- SWOT Analysis
- Choosing between different GPS routes
- Porter’s Five Forces
- Decision-making trees to show different outcomes and weight them
- Cost-benefit analysis of each option
- Cynefin framework - what kind of environment are you deciding in?
- PESTLE analysis
- De Bono six thinking hats
- Reflective Practice
- Simulation of the decision-making environment
- Feedback from others on your decision-making progress
- Making the decision using mindfulness to improve focus
- Measure the decision against your own goals
- How will you bring the decision into reality - what are the basic steps?
- Action-Learning Cycle
- Feedback Loops
- Conclusion: What have we learned about decision making?
