WoT News #9
Dear WoT News readers,
Starting this month, and in chronological order:

I. WoT Conversation Ep.4
June 6, 2025
topic: Multiscript, Multilingual, Multicultural, with Garine Gokceyan, Thomas Huot-Marchand, Liang Hai, Toshi Omagari, and Morgane Pierson.
We will address questions around knowledge and experience in typography and type design with more scripts and/or languages than one, influence of Latin type design over other scripts, decolonizing or de-Latinizing typography and type design. Big topics, I know.
WoT Conversations are live events, free and open to all. It’s going to be on Zoom for WoT members, at the end there will be a Q&A session with all members. And for non-members, the discussion will be broadcasted live on our YouTube channel.

II. Font Business Conference 2025
I’ll join the last panel on Saturday June 14th—Vision 2040: The Future of the Font Industry—to talk about…well, what the panel’s title says. Ticket prices are…pricey, but for whoever can afford this, having clearer ideas of how to sell your work in ways that suit you is just as important as knowing how to do it.
Registrations are still open. Join us to hear what we’ll talk about!

III. Cyrillic script and typography (lecture), with Maria Doreuli & Krista Radoeva.
June 21, 2025
Maria is a type designer and the founder of Contrast Foundry, a typeface design studio based in San Francisco.
Krista is an independent typeface designer, based in Sofia, Bulgaria, specializing in Latin, Cyrillic and Greek scripts.
Their workshop is planned for October 11 and 25. Infos are on the events website.
IV. Knuth—Bigelow Incubator 2025 starting soon
The first edition of the KBI is starting soon! From June 23 to July 24, more than 20 participants will spend 5 weeks, 10 sessions, 2 to 4 hours each session, to learn the basics of type design with many awesome designers and typographers. This program’s particularity lies, first, in its multiple tracks: this year with Decolonizing Latin (hosted by Letterform Archive’s team), South East Asia, and Arabic (both hosted by WoT), and second, in the fact that its participants are students selected by the SILICON @ Stanford program’s team to have their tuition fully covered, thanks to the support of Donald Knuth and Charles Bigelow (hence the program named after them!).

But, GREAT (quite belated) NEWS. For the South East Asian and Arabic groups, there are a few spots available to join the full program or its 2-sessions workshops. If you don’t have anything to do this summer, join us and learn (a LOT).
Full program is 400€, workshops are 220€. Really really nice price for such a great line-up. Don’t miss this. More info on the website.
V. WE (I) NEED YOU
The encyclopedia is online. It got visitors (+1100 in April! And staying for 10min in average 😮). It got a reward (TDC71 Winner, yessss!).
But we still need help to get going. There are many options to contribute:
- membership if you’re an individual;
- sponsorship if you’re a type foundry;
- partnership (sponsor our events) if you’re a company or type foundry;
- donations too!
Please reach out to make it happen 💫
We all need some time to chill a little and start afresh. So July will be a bit of a slower month (mostly dedicated to KBI, which won’t be thaaat slow). So there won’t be a newsletter in July, but I’ll be back in August, with always awesome news!
Thanks for reading, following, supporting, everything 💖
