Things I'm Watching: COVID Edition

Only three years into a pandemic...

I had a much longer piece in the pipeline about New Kids on the Block, but on Sunday night my temperature spiked and I developed a nasty cough. Lo and behold, after three years of dodging it, I finally have COVID. Trying to do anything for more than a few minutes has proven to be a fool’s errand, so this will be a short dispatch. (It’s not so much the pain—okay, the pain is pretty bad—but the fatigue that’s proven to be kicking my ass.) So here are some things I’ve been alternately watching and falling asleep in front of:

Campion

My ultimate cozy mystery show. I watched it while hit with bronchitis in college, while dealing with Swine Flu in my twenties, and now in this COVID time. Peter Davison brings the same grinning schoolboy charm to Albert Campion (known to be a pseudonym) that he brought to The Doctor, and he honestly always seems to be having more fun in this grounded scenario. Then again, no Doctor has ever had a foil quite as formidable as Brian Glover. The PBS Mystery! anthology had many fantastic shows, but this will always be my favorite.

The Bad Movie Bible

If Rob Hill only had an encyclopedic and immediate recall of every terrible movie ever made then his work would still be invaluable. He also has a curator’s eye for history and a sense of humor so dry that it comes in tubs like OxyClean. Film history when done right can be immensely entertaining, and if it involves a rapping Billy Dee Williams then so much the better.

QI

Every series of QI is a gift! I feel as if I’m in a minority that enjoys the Sandi Toksvig years as much as the Stephen Fry years, but however you slice this celebration of intelligence and ignorance it’s always a fun time. I’m never going to turn down a program(me) that teaches me about space and gives me banter between Desiree Burch and Hannah Waddingham.

Stay safe out there and take care of your health!
