wake up to vegetables already
gathered time to pack up
go to breakfast learn just
what's up with sail plans
and crew meetings then
six
hours of
swimming and
viewing sculpture
stealing rosemary
and lavender from a chapel's
orchard before we go
back to haul our bags down
and run a taxi down so we can
shop for groceries as a hivemind
(concealing a cake and champagne
from the birthday'd captain) whence I
dash out to find a stovetop espresso
machine a lemon juicer coolers fruit
hammocks (concealing a basil
plant [Bob] and dark chocolate)
and back to get everything on the
boat so we can sail away but the
wind's dicy and the
dockmaster is too busy
watching the game
(croatia-russia world cup quarterfinals)
to come tonight and so those of us
who kinda wanted to stay and watch
the game anyway do so, wandering
to find
a smoky emotional room; we arrive
as russia scores and many eyes
seem to hold us responsible; but croatia
ties, and then it's overtime and they
pull ahead to many shouts only to be
tied again, it's down to PKs but we're
delaying the birthday surprise so we
walk quickly back, guessing from
cheers and peeking through
open windows to keep up,
reaching the boat only minutes
after Croatia wins and the city of Split
explodes with fireworks, shouts, horns;
the cake is excellent, we cheers
& figure out berths &
sleep, prepared to hurry again
tomorrow.
