The National Commission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM) officially confirmed on Friday afternoon, August 12 2022, that ex-police Internal Affairs Chief Ferdy Sambo admitted to have been the leading actor in the murder case of his aide, Brigadier Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat, also known as Brigadier J.
Brigadier J was shot dead on July 8 2022, at the main residence of Sambo, the Head of the National Police's Profession and Security Division, in Duren Tiga, South Jakarta.
The incident sparked public suspicion after the families of the victims disclosed strange wounds on Brigadier J's body. Suspicion grew further after family members were barred from opening the coffin and conducting traditional rituals, as well as being denied official funeral ceremonies.
Sambo's confession emerged shortly after he was questioned by Komnas HAM at the Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) headquarters. "We [interrogated him] in a separate room. He acknowledged being the primary actor in this incident," Komnas HAM Chairperson Ahmad Taufan Damanik stated.
The Chief General of the National Police Listyo Sigit Prabowo's Special Team had previously summoned four suspects in Brigadier Joshua's death: Ferdy Sambo, Bharada E or Richard Eliezer Pudihang Lumiu, Brigadier RR or Ricky Rizal, and KM Kuwat, the driver of Ferdy Sambo's wife.
According to the discovery made by the highest brass of the National Police during a press briefing at the head office in South Jakarta, Ferdy Sambo himself ordered the execution.
It was revealed that Sambo commanded Bharada E to use Brigadier RR's weapon to kill Brigadier J. Sambo then used Brigadier J's weapon to shoot at the walls of the crime scene.
Police are still investigating Sambo’s motives behind the murder, and whether Sambo had directly shot at Brigadier J.
Sambo is now facing numerous charges that could result in the death penalty, life imprisonment, or 20 years in prison.

What We're Reading
If you’re reading this newsletter the day it’s released, it’ll be one day before Indonesia’s 77th Independence Day. During the course of celebrations, there is usually time taken to remember national heroes. Hence, we’re featuring a Jakarta Post article this week that can help us to introspect our views of heroes and heroism in the lead up to Independence Day celebrations.
Indonesia's stars talk about national heroes and the meaning of heroism: “What makes someone a hero? I don't think they have to be well-known. As long as they are useful to their society, they have earned the right to be considered a hero — even if their impact does not reach a massive scale. That and also, someone who can shepherd others so that they can be useful to society as well.” - Interview by Felix Martua (The Jakarta Post).

The Earth of Mankind (Movie, Directed by Hanung Bramantyo)
Continuing along with the theme of Independence Day, this movie adaptation of Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s legendary novel by the same name gives a beautiful insight into power, colonialism, love, and injustice in the pre-independence era. The original book >>>>>> this movie any day, but unless you can finish a whole book in a day, streaming this movie on Netflix as an Independence Day celebration mightn’t be a bad idea…
