Welcome to the eighth edition of the Windows Copilot Newsletter, where we share some of the most interesting stories from the rapidly evolving field of AI chatbots. This week has seen some fundamental shifts - so let’s dive right in.

Google unveils ‘Gemini’, a ‘multi-modal’ AI chatbot: Despite repeated rumours that Google’s next-generation AI chatbot had been delayed into next year, this week Google unveiled Gemini, in three versions. Ultra is still in testing, but can handle multi-modal interactions (text and image and video and audio); Pro has already been integrated into Google Bard, kicking the unloved PaLM2 model to the curb; and Nano is currently heading toward Pixel 8 Pro users as a system update. Copilot in ‘general release’: In a bit of anticlimax, Microsoft announced that Copilot had left its ‘preview’ phase and was now in general release. Wherever you get Microsoft products, services and tools, you can get Copilot. Read the announcement here.
Amazon’s Q plagued by hallucinations: No sooner did Amazon launch its own AI chatbot, Q, than reports began to pile up about its confabulations and poor behavior. These were internal reports, from Amazon staffers - not a great look. Read that here.

Scientific American published research showing how ‘jailbroken’ AI chatbots can be used to lure other AI chatbots to do all sorts of things their ‘guardrails’ should help them avoid. One bad apple does spoil the whole chatbot! Read that here.
