Two sawyers, in Washington and Michigan, publish the same rate to turn your log into lumber: $0.55 a board foot. Wood-Mizer sells the machine that does it for $2,995.

That is 5,445 board feet of his rate: about 30 logs, or 39 hours at the maker's own best-case speed.
