I deactivated my instagram account on Friday. If you've been reading my newsletter since the beginning, then you know that this is something I've been considering for quite sometime. The only thing that was preventing me from pulling the plug was that some of the events that I do mostly, if not completely communicate on instagram. This is still relevant, but at the end of the day, it wasn't important enough to keep me on the platform. Deactivation isn't deletion, but in my case, it does seem like the first step to the inevitable reality. Reminding myself that instagram is not a business plan, it's a bulletin board. A virtual bulletin board.
My world is no longer entangled with scrolling and dopamine hits and I can finally hear myself think because my mind is not cluttered. Time seems to have expanded because I do not feel beholden to my phone. I am living a completely authentic creative life that is not shaped by the algorithm and I am free.
I'm not much of a FOMO person. More like a FOBI (fear of being included) as Wednesday Addams so eloquently put it. But, after being tethered to social media for more than ten years, it does make one feel slightly adrift in the world of the interwebs. How will people find my website? How will anyone know who I am or what I do? Where do I share the new work I'm making? How will anyone know that I listed new things on my website? I'll promote my work with care and intention here on my newsletter, through conversations with friends, word of mouth, and in my real life community. If something I make moves you, tell a friend or forward this newsletter. And slowly, in real time people will find me. And, it will work. Thank you for being here.
Have a wonderful week,
xo,
Christa
Last week at a glance
I started working on a crochet tank sample for a pdf. I'm about halfway finished.
I'm figuring out a size chart for crochet scrap yarn beanies I'm going to offer on my website as made-to-order starting in the fall.
I decided that all of my crochet offerings on the website are going to be made-to-order from now on. Aside from accessories though, I'm not sure what else I'm going to offer. I'd welcome any suggestions in the comments. It does involve me figuring out a lot of size charts, but I think it's a better way to be more mindful about my production.
I finished the quilt top for the quilt I'm making for my cousin's baby who will be arriving soon.
I'm working on a paper lantern. I forgot how long it takes to add SO many layers.
I boxed up a bunch of books to sell back to thrift books
I finally dropped off the last of the mountain of books I donated to the little free libraries in my neighborhood.
My oldest recommended the book, All the Bright Places, which I started a couple of days ago. So far I like it.
My husband found a sweet brand new (or almost) Lowe Alpine backpack at a yard sale on Saturday for $10
I went hiking with my family.
Look at that blue sky.
I bought some cool buttons here The buttons are only 5 for $5 and they make them in-house. It took me back to my days of covering my jeans jacket with buttons when I was a kid. Once a new wave/alternative gen x kid always one.
I ordered three cordsmiths (a mini, large, and extra large) and they're arriving today. I'm pretty excited.
Check it out here
I've been considering having two little free libraries out front of my house. One for books and one for art supplies. I was originally considering doing just one for art supplies, but I thought people would continually put books in it. If I have two, then maybe they'll understand. I'm hopeful, but we shall see. People really don't pay attention.
I received an email from these folks who saw one of my stickers in a little free library. They'd like to feature me on their website. This was pretty encouraging, since it showed me that my sticker marketing is working.
This Bukowski poem really resonated with me. It's actually fairly positive, at least for Bukowski.
