Returning to myself
Dear Reader,
I hope you are enjoying your holiday season.
I’ve been allowing myself time to relax over the holidays, which means that I haven’t been fervently making things on a daily basis like I normally do. After the whirlwind of art shows throughout the holiday shopping season, I was feeling a bit burned out, so a creative rest was definitely in order. Even if I’m not creating with my hands, I’m always creating with my brain. During my holiday break I’ve been figuring out when I want to teach my first crochet class of 2026 and what that will be. The first class I plan on teaching is Intuitive Crochet, which will happen some time in early February.

In this first intuitive crochet class, you will learn basic techniques so you can then build upon that information and create whatever you’d like. As you become more advanced and comfortable with your abilities, we will work on more complicated projects in subsequent classes. If you’re more inclined to follow patterns, and that’s how you would like to work, then take the information you learn from my classes and do that. This first class is a starting point. If there’s a lot of interest, I would like to teach many different classes all based on the intuitive approach to crocheting, which is exclusively how I create. Sometimes I have a plan for what I want to make and sometimes I don’t. I find it exciting to not always have expectation and allow a piece to unfold as you go, trusting your instincts. I’m really looking forward to teaching people how to crochet in such a new and different way. My hope is that folks who have hesitated to learn crochet because of rigid structure or patterns will feel that this method of crocheting is right for them. I plan on these classes being very inclusive, and open to everyone with the desire to learn. All ages and abilities are welcome in the classes. Children under the age of eighteen must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All necessary supplies will be provided by me.

Have you always wanted to crochet, but you have found crochet patterns to be overly complicated for no apparent reason?
Do you prefer to do things your own way, and not follow patterns, recipes, or maybe even unnecessary rules in general?
Would you appreciate an honest dialogue from one right-brained person to another who has bypassed traditional crochet to think outside of the box and create wearable art?
If you answered yes to any (or maybe all) of these questions then please join me for ongoing crochet classes where I will teach you to throw out the rules and crochet intuitively.

Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist. -Picasso

Last week at a glance
If you read last week’s newsletter, you might remember that my dog had a leg injury. After we went to the vet, we found out that he actually has a spinal injury. He went home with medication and detailed instructions for how to care for him, including rehabilitation exercises. I’m happy to report that he is doing very well.
Due to illness in our extended family, we had a quiet Christmas at home. It was very relaxing, which was exactly what we needed.
My husband made a delicious Christmas Eve dinner and brunch for Christmas Day.
I’m not normally a person who is drawn to sweets, but there are so many delicious homemade treats in the house right now in addition to candy in my Christmas stocking. So, I’ve been having a little plate of sweets after lunch everyday. My favorite is the homemade peanut brittle. The salty and sweet combination gets me every time.
My family and I watched Stranger Things. This season is so good, and I can’t believe that it’s almost over.
We spent time with good friends.
I allowed myself some time to just chill out and do nothing. Even if I might not have been able to shut my brain off in the process.
I talked to my bff on the phone for over two hours. We’ve been friends since we were college roommates, and I’m so grateful that I’ve had her in my life for all of these years.
I received some really great tools as gifts that I can’t wait to use. My favorite one is a mending tool.
I’ve been working on some digital art which I hope to transfer onto fabric.
I ordered a tufting frame.
I finished reading A Carnival of Snackery and Child of God.
I purchased pegboard and my husband is going to hang it in my studio so I can free up some floor space and have more display possibilities.
I moved a folding table and chair into the studio. Even though I have a home studio, I thought it would be nice to be able to work in my additional studio as well. So, now I have that option.
