Are we really busy, or just distracted?
It’s all happening.
Dear Reader,
First of all, I'd like to give a warm welcome to all of the new subscribers. My subscribers doubled this week, huzzah! I'm so glad you decided to join me here on this platform. I plan on upgrading my plan sometime this month which will enable me to turn the comments on so we can interact. In the meantime, please check out the links at the bottom of the page where you can reach out if you have any thoughts or comments.
Everyone is busy
In today's world we're all too busy. We're over scheduled and over worked, with more professional and personal responsibilities than one person should be able to manage in a day. But, amidst all of this, are we really busy? To a degree, yes, we are. We have long work hours, sometimes multiple jobs, and many demands on our time. But, we're also infinitely more distracted by our phones, which takes up a lot of our time in a day. Have you ever looked at your screen time and been shocked or incredulous? I know I have. It's Because it's an insidious time suck.
How do we combat the screens that hold so much of our attention?
I don't know if I have the answer for this, because I'm sure it's different for everyone. Like everything else in life, keeping things in perspective is always a good place to start. Looking at our phones a million times a day is a habit, which means that it can be unlearned and we can create new more healthy habits
Some things that work for me
- Making sure I see the sun before I see a screen.
This one is a biggie and it definitely sets the tone for my day.
- Turning my phone off at night.
I started doing this a couple of months ago, and it has transformed my sleep.
- Keeping my phone in a different room.
Seems like a no-brainer, but it works like a charm.
- I like to listen to audio books and podcasts when I work, which does make it tempting to look at my phone, so I started doing this on the computer instead and leaving my phone in another room.
- delete social media apps for a couple of hours, the day, or however long you need to do it.
- Take a walk and leave your phone at home. Yep, unplug from the matrix.
Do you have any tips that work for you? If so, I'd love to hear them.
Some things from this week
*I finished up a fabric art collage.
- I started a new art piece that I'm submitting at the end of the month. I plan on embellishing this with appliqué and possibly some painting. I'll share my progress next week.
- I edited my zine so I can hopefully fit it on eight pages.
- I applied to two art shows
- I received a donation of vintage textiles from a customer.
- I did some work on my website.
- I've been making handmade stickers with my business name and website and sticking them all over town.
What's going on with my instagram?
- Well, at first I planned on deactivating (not permanently deleting) my account. I just wanted to be able to pop in from time to time and have my account not be active when I wasn't there.
- I found out from some sources that instagram can delete your account if you do this, particularly if you deactivate and then reactivate a number of times, and/or if you aren't active for 28 days.
- I don't know if this is completely true, because some sources said that it wasn't, but I don't think it's instagram's decision whether my account should be deleted or not. So where does that leave me?
- New plan: I will be active on this platform and share weekly, because this is where I really want to be. This community might be much smaller than my instagram one, but I really love writing and sharing here every week. I will not be ruled by the algorithm.
- However, to avoid deletion or people having no idea where I am, I will keep my instagram account active, but I will only pop in to check DMS and maybe post no more than once a month, if that.
Thank you for being here. I hope you have a wonderful week.
xo,
Christa
