Pottery and Video Game Plans - Why Am I Making This? Issue #20

Hello everyone!

It's Julien. You know the drill - artist, potter, game developer, whatever. It’s going to be another short newsletter today. This is because I am about to have a frenzied weekend of video game work, as I am going to try to finish my first ever game jam game (!!!) by early next week. You’ll hear about how that went next month.

In other video game news, I did a lot of work on A Birthday Gift For Maribelle (which now has its own itch.io page) in February, but I’m going to try to keep quiet about most of that for a little while longer. I’m optimistic that I will indeed be able to finish it this year! And maybe even well before the end of the year - but I shouldn’t curse myself.

To tide you over for now, here are a lot of pottery photos from my backlog. Everything I made last year was made of white stoneware, but I’ve been experimenting with black clay over the beginning of 2022, and have liked the results a lot so far. As ever, there’s so much to learn.

Finally, a note about inspiration. If you’ve been reading this newsletter for any length of time, you’ll know that I am perennially in an existential crisis about my own creative pursuits. The beginning of this month was particularly bad, probably the worst I’ve felt in months about the direction of my life. But things turned around in the second half of the month, when events conspired to let me chat with some other creative people (my writer partner’s friends, friends-of-friends, and so on) over a magical few days. There is nothing that makes me feel that the things I’m making are more worthwhile than spending time with other people talking about the things they’re making.

I’m trying to stay grounded in the memory of those conversations, even as global news darkens our collective mood. I hope you can find something like that too.

Talk to you next month,

Julien
