Crochet - Why Am I Making This? Issue # 25
Hello everyone!
It’s Julien. It’s July. July is almost over. Phew. This month, despite doing a lot of fun stuff and having some extraordinarily lovely conversations and moments of connection with people, I have been feeling “pretty bad” for a handful of reasons outside my control. That’s life!
I have had no energy to do most of my usual creative pursuits, but in a moment of good fortune I saw a tweet with a crocheted version of Claire from A Short Hike (great game) and became obsessed with the idea of learning to crochet to make her. I have plenty of yarn from my rug-making and punchneedle interests over the past few years, so all I needed to get started were some crochet hooks and tutorials about how to crochet.
Reader, what a great decision. I have been crocheting constantly because it is soothing to my fried brain like nothing else. I make something, but don’t have to do any creative “work” - I just follow a pattern. I focus and count stitches. I listen to the familiar voices of my favorite podcast hosts. And for a time, bad feelings are dulled or fade away.
The first thing I made, a test critter/blobby cat based on some free patterns:
Claire (pattern by Svena Rösner):
Rosa (pattern from a book by Yan Schenkel, “Animal Friends of Pica Pau”):
Photos are phone photos; see comment above about no energy. But making critters and little clothes for them is the best. I’m not sure how long this period will last - we’ll see. For now, I have removed almost all pressure from myself and am just crocheting.
Love,
Julien
PS. The one other creative thing I did this month was draw a few angel characters from a game idea. For posterity, here they are:
PPS: The video game of the month is Dyson Sphere Program, which my partner and I have both become fixated on. It’s a space exploration themed management sim game and is very fun and addictive.
PPPS: Here’s a photo of a nice moment this month - my partner and our friend, making plans for dinner out.
