Hi Friends,

Just a quick newsletter this week.

I am one of the preachers for tomorrow's Freedom Church of the Poor's Palm Sunday Service. Some of you have "visited" our services in the past if you'd like to join us you can register below. And there's a short post I've been mulling over all week on the practice of silence.

Wess

Recently On Gathering In Light

Silence Can Save Us - "In our world, where the last thing from our minds is being quiet, where the doom scroll, the death toll, the all-knowing algorithms, data-tracking apps, climate catastrophe, and capitalism seek to clog our hearts and minds or "zombify" us, it is hard to hear our own thoughts let alone God’s quiet voice. These liturgies of empire are meant to lull us to sleep. Keep us distracted. Turn our attention into capitalist retention. The billion dollar distraction machine leave us numb and bitter, unable to move or act."

Freedom Church of the Poor Palm Sunday - Struggle and Lament Lenten Series

Freedom Church of the Poor - RSVP: bit.ly/LENT2024

As you may know, I have been involved in The Freedom Church since its founding during the early days of the pandemic. It is an online church founded after Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's calling for a "freedom church of the poor."

Here's the mission of this church:

The Freedom Church of the Poor is a spiritual and political home for movement leaders. We believe in the fundamental dignity and value of all life and in a world of abundance where all can thrive. We gather as a community of faith to support and care for each other. We commit to realizing the abundant world God promises by identifying, developing, and uniting leaders who will build a movement to end poverty led by the poor. In this community and through our commitment to this struggle we also seek to re-discover and share a vision and practice of religion that is rooted in truth, justice, and love.

My message will center on the John 12:12-26 text and the movement within that text towards a challenge of empire.
