Feb event follow up and future wall building event!

The Wendy Olson Arboretum, Inc.

Hello Neighbors,

It was great seeing you all this Sunday. Boy, we picked up a lot of trash and Brooks built a heck of a campfire with the kids in the neighborhood. It was so inspiring to see everyone working hard, enjoying the lovely afternoon, getting to know our neighbors, and enjoying marshmallows on a twig!

marshmallows!
Wendy Olson Arboretum Inc. President Brian Dodge, and Secretary (yours truly) smile with delight as Hunter carefully shows the beautiful crayfish he scooped up out of the robust and healthy creek that runs the length of the property :)

Bonnie seemed very pleased to have gotten so many signatures for the speed bump petition. Could this be goodbye to cars crashing into houses and fawns killed by speeding cars? Fingers crossed!

fir, pine sap, and cedar clunks make excellent starters and a wonderful crackling sound!

Between the trash pickup and the campfire afterward, we had just around 45 people show up!

what a turn out!

Everyone seems interested and offered some great ideas for future events. We are thinking in March, we could do a plant and seed swap, in April a stream health tour, and maybe some invasive removal in the arboretum? Please share your thoughts and stay tuned!

In the mean time, next Sunday Feb 24, Brooks will be demonstrating dry stone wall building techniques over on Occoneechee Street! Brooks has been building parks and gardens for the last 40 years and much of Duke Gardens (and all of the Wendy Olson Arboretum Inc.) features his stone and trail work. He uses ancient building techniques and is very knowledgeable in this historic craft. This demonstration is supported by the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough.

Come with questions ready to learn! If there is enough interest, maybe Brooks would be willing to hold a dry stone wall building class in the arboretum!

Thanks to everyone who turned out. Special thanks to our neighbor Alex who brought her delicious homemade sourdough bread using her 1950s Starter! She has generously offered to share the starter with anyone who would like to try; just reply to this email and I'll get you guys together.

Wow. We are building our West Hillsborough community one neighbor at a time. See you all in March!

Warm Regards,

Vanessa
