Weekly Thing #75 / Oct 13, 2018
Tesla Model 3 safety, OpenID decline, Instagram bullying, Apple Frames shortcut, RECaf caffeine tracking, Halide RAW camera, senior engineer's job.
You could call this the New York issue of the Weekly Thing. For years I’ve told my kids that when they turn 13 I will take them on a trip, just Dad and them, to New York City to see the sights. Mazie is 13 so we boarded our flight to Newark on Friday and spent the weekend seeing NYC in all of it’s grandeur. 👨👧
It was so great to see the city through her eyes. She loved the experience of New York. For sure, School of Rock: The Musical was a big highlight for her. We saw the Statue of Liberty and also looked up my Great Grandfather Josef Gins in Ellis Island. It was amazing for my daughter to think of him at 15 years old, just two years older than her, immigrating to the United States all on his own. 😲
We had a fabulous time and we need to make this the first, not the last, of trips like this. ✈️
I also want to welcome a group of subscribers that discovered the Weekly Thing via Azeem Azhar's Exponential View ! I subscribe to EV and they welcome subscribers to share things they are working on. In issue #186, there is a mention of the Weekly Thing in the “What you are up to” section. Welcome to my little spot in your mailbox to share what was interesting to me over the last week. I hope you enjoy it! 🤝

How Tesla Made the Model 3 So Safe
This article highlights some of the amazing safety aspects of the Tesla Model 3.
So basically, when Tesla says its Model 3 has the “lowest probability of injury” ever tested by NHTSA, it means that the overall VSS score (which represents the “relative risk of injury with respect to a baseline of 15 percent”) of 0.38 is lower than that of any car ever tested.
That’s impressive, any way you slice it.
Lowest ever is very impressive!
Tech Workers Now Want to Know: What Are We Building This For? - The New York Times
It’s about time that technology workers factor the outcome of their work into their decision to work on it.
Across the technology industry, rank-and-file employees are demanding greater insight into how their companies are deploying the technology that they built. At Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Salesforce, as well as at tech start-ups, engineers and technologists are increasingly asking whether the products they are working on are being used for surveillance in places like China or for military projects in the United States or elsewhere.
That’s a change from the past, when Silicon Valley workers typically developed products with little questioning about the social costs.
This is a good thing.

It’s a little surprising that 20-30 years into the discipline of software engineering we are still debating what different levels mean, but there is a lot of ambiguity and difference between organizations on this.
