3 Self-Portraits (2023)

I drew these three self portraits as part of out patient treatment. sometimes in the afternoon we’d listen to each other go through a creative response activity. They’d haul out the crayola and all us adults would get down to work of waiting for our turn to answer vaugely humiliating questions.

It was a good laugh actually. Maybe not pleasant but a familiar sort of monotony under the watchful eye of a social worker who I really loved. Just getting to draw whatever I wanted and be doing it right felt so freeing.

I drew these in crayola pastel and I love the style. Im always wishing I could recapture it in new ways. I was thinking a lot about queerness, Keith Haring, and Mishima.

Self Portrait as Saint Sebastian.
Self portrait as Saint George’s Dragon
Self portait as Edgar’s Father from Edgar Sawtelle by David Worbleski.

These have been hanging on a cork board forever. I had to move 2 tarot cards (the devil and the 10 of cups), a chain mail ring sizing guide, about 10 frames of John Carpenter’s the thing, and one postcard to get to them.

More Tomorrow (today? its 3 am),

It stands out so immediately to me how all three of these body shapes are simple and singular in color, and so much of what defines the first two of them as representations is in what objects have been jammed into the body.

The appearance of the saints is so variable, what defines them, especially in Medieval and early representational art is their symbols. Especially the visceral ones.

These are brilliant. Self portraits are underrated, and 'self portrait as' even more so. powerful objects surrounded by powerful objects.

I'm so glad you like them you being such a good artist yourself. I think self portrait as x is such an interesting exercise. I eventually want to write about games of figuring out who you are in different contexts or dressed as different figures and this is a start for that.

I LOVE this style, crayons are a wonderful medium. Keith Haring definitely came to mind while looking at them. My older kiddo has a picture book biography about him and we read it often, and I picked up a bunch of the USPS Haring stamps the other day - kiddo recognized the art from "the boy who wouldn't stop drawing"! I'm excited to show him these portraits when he's home from school.
