Animated Gestures

Before we get into the meat of this edition (another short one), just a heads up: my obligatory self-promotion section at the start of my newsletters are gonna be a bit longer for a while. You’ll see why in a bit.

Support my work

Work-Life Balance is an award-winning prose/comics hybrid that I co-created with Benjamin Chee. Get it from Blackwell’s, Barnes & Noble (US), Bookshop.Org (US), Toppings & Company (UK), Waterstones (UK), WHSmith (UK), and Kinokuniya (SG).

Work-Life Balance is eligible for nomination in four categories of The Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards.

A for-your-consideration visual for WORK-LIFE BALANCE. On the left is the book's cover. Its title is in white and centred on the cover, with the subtitle, MALEVOLENT MANAGERS AND FOLKLORIC FREELANCERS, below it in smaller white type. At the bottom of the cover are our names, BENJAMIN CHEE and WAYNE RÉE, in a similarly sized white type as the subtitle. The rest of the cover is made up of humans, creatures, and spirits in a variety of settings like temples with demonic sculptures and offices with cubicles. The rest of the for-your-consideration visual is made up of the headline in white, FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION, at the top and the category, Best Original Graphic Novel, below it, together with book's full title below that, all of which are also in white. On the right are three other categories paired with our names, all also in white: Best Writer - WAYNE RÉE, Best Artist - BENJAMIN CHEE, and Best Cover Artist - BENJAMIN CHEE. At the bottom, also in white, is the call to action: VOTE NOW AT RINGOAWARDS.COM. Next to this is the Ringo Awards logo: a white circle with black text on the inner circumference: THE MIKE WIERINGO COMIC BOOK INDUSTRY AWARDS. In the middle of the circle is Mike Wieringo's autograph in black: a signature that just reads, "Ringo!" The background for the for-your-consideration visual is the book's cover, but with muted colours as well as a light brown hue over it.

Worlds Apart: A Conversation About Mental Health is a comic that I co-created with Nurjannah Suhaimi. Get it in-store at Greenlight Comics (AU), Kalibak’s Kave (SG), and G&B Comics (SG).

Worlds Apart will be available globally in August as part of the collection, How Are You Feeling?.

Adapt or die

Robot Playground Media, the studio that optioned Work-Life Balance for an animated series, has released a first look of the adaptation—and it is glorious.

The poster for the WORK-LIFE BALANCE animated series. In the foreground are a group of creatures and spirits. Clockwise from the top: a demon in a red suit, a rākshasi in a green blazer and orange shirt, a pontianak in a red floral dress, a toyol sucking on a bittle of bubble tea, a human woman in batik-inspired office wear, a jiang shit in a purple blazer and white shirt with black-rimmed glasses, a manananggal in a purple blazer and white top, and a ba jiao gui in an orange dress. Behind them is a skyline, with the central building's top surrounded by a large sigil. Right at the bottom is the animated series' name.

Here’s what they wrote in their post:

The Apocalypse has a KPI. First look at our adaptation of the award-winning, genre-mashing graphic / prose novel from the minds of @waynereewrites and @charsiewspace and published by @differenceenginesg. Supported by @nacsingapore. Currently in active development, we'll be presenting this adult animated series to buyers for the first time at @annecyfestival.

I wish that Ben and I had come up with that excellent tagline—The Apocalypse has a KPI—but that’s all Robot Playground. Which is precisely why we trust them to create a tonally different, but still thematically faithful adaptation.

I checked to see when the Annecy Festival would be held and it’s taking place around my birthday. While I understand that deals like this take a whole lot longer than a day or two, I’ll still keep my fingers crossed that Robot Playground gives me one of the best presents I could ask for: good news.

And that’s it
