repair

in the Berlin sky there are dolphins and the Alps
reach for god on the horizon

orangutans watch
and learn as tigers succumb to our new plague
meanwhile I owe you lunch meanwhile I miss you
half to death I wish I had a number for your mother
if she is where you are

who will believe us
when we tell them how a decade turned against us
like what if I need to believe in the dolphins
the idea of dolphins the notion of repair which
is just another word for going back

what then
I think of asking you I think of every laugh
you ever gave me undeserving

you’d hate
the goddamn dolphins if you knew about the dolphins
if you didn’t stick to radio and print you’d say
you never needed dolphins you’d say don’t become
the guy who needs the dolphins not like this
not like this

there are no dolphins but
the water’s liquid glass no place remaining
to repair to but a future starting slow beyond sight
and we follow

to a time when I can take you
someplace fancy after work and let the world
assume the weight of what is not.
