You may be wondering why a Water & Music newsletter issue is landing in your inbox on a Monday. That’s because I’ve been working on an extensive report with a few collaborators that sits right at the heart of what this newsletter is all about — namely, big ideas and trends at the intersection of music and tech — and wanted to make sure you all received it first.
Here goes: What Do Mary Meeker’s 2019 Internet Trends Mean For Music? (tl;dr click here for some music/tech knowledge! (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1LD7-6PoH8d0Cl4ijBwBPLxKM343SL2LhAOmkXCUWNjI/edit?usp=sharing) )
Given technology companies’ growing impact on music — Spotify, Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Google, TikTok, Twitch, you name it — there’s one question constantly looming in the back of everyone’s minds: Which tech trends will have the most significant influence on the music industry this year?
Unsurprisingly, one of the best tools for answering this question comes from outside the music bubble.
Venture-capital veteran Mary Meeker’s annual Internet Trends report, now in its 24th year, has grown to become the de facto bible for Silicon Valley. The report tracks the most important global shifts across areas including but not limited to mobile, e-commerce, advertising, streaming and gaming. To give you a sense of scope, this year’s edition clocks in at a healthy 333 slides (https://techcrunch.com/2019/06/11/internet-trends-report-2019/) .
For those who aren’t familiar with Meeker: she’s a former general partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB), leading the firm’s digital growth funds. She left KPCB in September 2018 after a reported internal power struggle (https://fortune.com/longform/kleiner-perkins-vc-fall/) , and recently launched her own growth fund Bond Capital with $1.25 billion in tow (https://techcrunch.com/2019/04/24/mary-meeker-raises-1-25b-for-bond-her-debut-growth-fund/) — making Bond the first-ever VC fund founded and run by a woman to cross the billion-dollar threshold. Her first investment out of Bond is in design platform Canva (https://www.canva.com/) .
Fellow writers/marketers Amber Horsburgh, Josh Coase and I banded together and analyzed all 333 of Meeker’s slides so you don’t have to — summarizing how her insights parallel the latest trends and innovations in the music business, and, most importantly, what opportunities they reveal for artists with respect to marketing and creative strategy.
We managed to package it into a hopefully much more digestible 61 slides, which you can peruse online by CLICKING HERE (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1LD7-6PoH8d0Cl4ijBwBPLxKM343SL2LhAOmkXCUWNjI/edit?usp=sharing) .
If you’re looking for a recent historical comparison: Two years ago, I wrote a similar piece in Forbes (https://www.forbes.com/sites/cheriehu/2017/06/19/mary-meekers-2017-internet-trends-what-do-they-mean-for-music/) about the 2017 edition of Meeker’s report, diving into what its findings on curation, mobile, voice and gaming mean for music, which may be a useful reference point.
And while you’re at it, subscribe to Amber’s music marketing newsletter Deep Cuts (https://us2.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=f0541c84182af8be2e2a9a627&id=6b07de7ce8) , and follow Josh’s website Coase Media (https://www.coase.media/) .
