Person to Watch #001: Bella Sankey

Person to Watch #001: Bella Sankey. WATCH Sussex examines her public record, political ambitions and the questions that matter for Sussex residents.

Special newsletter

Preview: Her leadership record, regional responsibilities and the questions residents should be able to answer.

Bella Sankey moved from election to Brighton & Hove City Council into its leadership in less than six months. She now also chairs the Sussex & Brighton Strategic Authority.

Our first Person to Watch profile examines what the public record establishes: her campaigning background, the Cityclean inquiry commissioned under her leadership, and the authority’s announcement of £117m in initial government funding.

The distinction between a decision and its results matters. Commissioning an inquiry is an accountability step; sustained service improvement needs current evidence. An announced funding framework needs a visible trail from allocation to delivery.

The profile gives credit for documented action, explains the limits of the evidence and sets out the questions we will continue to investigate. WATCH has no substantive right-of-reply response to publish at the editorial cutoff; we will consider any response received.
