This is a reminder that this Sunday, I will be at the Chboro Zinefest in Carrboro, NC. Here’s the link.
Last year during this show there was some kind of event called “Open Streets” that shut down Weaver Street, which leads directly to the Carrboro Commons. There was, however, no one doing anything at the end of Weaver Street abutting the Commons, so no one was saying, “Well, as long as I’m frolicking in the open streets, I’ll head over to this zine show.”
It was also the day of local rock and roller Dexter Romweber’s funeral, so a good amount of the population who might be predisposed to go to a zine fest were attending that worthy event.
I didn’t really know Dex, but back when I owned a comic shop in Chapel Hill, I once told him that I wasn’t going to let him keep bringing back whichever $4 back issue of American Splendor he’d just bought to exchange it for the next one. He had been able to make it through four or five issues at that point on his four bucks, I think, and was fine with being cut off. He was, as they say, a character.
Anyway!
Chboro Zine Fest! See you there, maybe! Sunday from 11 to 4!
And here’s where I’ll be soon but not as soon. I still don’t have any more details on these shows beyond what’s listed here. Hopefully there’ll be more information out there soon…
ACME COMICS FREE COMIC BOOK DAY BLOCK PARTY: Saturday, May 3, Acme Comics Downtown, Greensboro, NC. More information coming soon. Acme Comics email newsletter announcement here.
DURHAM WORKS ON PAPER ROUNDUP: Friday, May 23, 6-10pm, Durham Armory, Durham, NC. More information coming soon. This is run by Bill Fick, who also puts on Zine Machine. His instagram is here.
I’m slowly chugging along on No Raccoons In Hell. Above is a panel in progress from the page I’m working on now. Soon it will be posted to my patreon!
And here are some drawings of Val in 1997, all drawn on lunch breaks at my day job, chronicling the journey of a pair of cargo pants:
I like drawing the 90s versions of Val and Tori in clothes that they’ve made into other clothes and would really like to include something like this in a comic at some point - a garment that probably is never mentioned but which changes over time.
I think I will be able to work the idea into a comic at some point, but in the meantime, I thought it would be fun to do a series of pinup drawings where Val is consistently wearing the same piece of clothing but has altered it in some way as you move from drawing to drawing.
OK, that’s it. Take care!
Thanks for reading!
