Wallowing in Ink with Courtney Floyd • Issue 33
Hi, hello! I’m Courtney. You’re probably here because you stumbled through a strange, discordantly humming and leaf-littered portal while you were going about your business on the internet. Or maybe it’s because you heard about my debut fantasy novel or my cozy horror audio drama series and wanted to learn what else I’m up to. Whatever the case, welcome.
I put off my March newsletter by a week so I could share some exciting news––and because it’s a milestone day!
Why, you ask?
Today we are exactly six months out from Higher Magic’s release.

Time has somehow both flown and absolutely sloth-crawled since my book deal. So much has been happening, but pub day still feels forever away. Except, that’s less true now. It’s a little less true every day, in fact.
I am currently working on pass pages, which means the book has been formatted––it looks like an actual book––and I’m searching it for typos like it’s the world’s most intense game of Where’s Waldo.
Updates
I am so, so delighted to share that the audiobook version of Higher Magic will be narrated by Sophie Amoss, who was literally at the top of my list of people we should consider. (I perhaps had more opinions about this than many debut authors, because of my audio drama background. I have such a clear sense of how Bartleby should sound and I know Amoss is going to nail it.)
In non-novel news, did you hear that we had Premee Mohamed on Unfortunately? I learned so much from that conversation and I encourage you to listen if you haven’t!
We also chatted with C. J. Dotson, one of the coolest writers I know. C. J.’s debut novel, The Cut, comes out tomorrow. (This is a recommendation, run don’t walk to your nearest indie!)
March Recommendations
Sylvie Cathrall’s A Letter from the Lonesome Shore
I knew as soon as I read the first book that Sylvie Cathrall would become one of my auto-read authors, and A Letter from the Lonesome Shore confirmed that. I cannot wait to see what Cathrall writes next!
I’m extremely late to Ann Leckie’s Imperial Radch series but I’m tearing through them now that I’ve found them. HOW DID I MISS THEM ALL THIS TIME? HOWWWWW?
I also read Sayaka Murata’s Convenience Store Woman in basically one sitting. It’s short and incredibly immersive, and I loved the ending.
Thanks for wallowing with me,
Courtney
