Milestones & Mushrooms • Wallowing in Ink Issue 49
in which: awards ceremony, publishing milestones and a free audio cut scene, works in progress, and mushrooms.
Hey, I’m Courtney Floyd, author of Higher Magic and creator of The Way We Haunt Now. Welcome to my monthly newsletter, Wallowing in Ink.
So, apparently it’s been four months since my last newsletter. In my defense: burnout. Also SAD, which is incredibly unfair to have when there’s sunlight. But here we are. I’m still not beating the vampire allegations, am I?
Anyway, I’m getting back on the keyboard this month because it’s fall and I feel alive again and I have some really good reasons to write, including:
two pretty cool milestones
and an audio drama cut scene you can listen to (for free)!

ALSO! The Rhysling Award ceremony is virtual and will happen on October 17th this year. ICYMI, my poem “Renfield at His Windowsill” (published in Small Wonders) is a finalist! More details about the ceremony here.
A Few Mossy Milestones
Next Wednesday, it will be a year since Higher Magic came out! To celebrate, I’m releasing my favorite pre-order incentive: an audio drama adaptation of a cut scene that I made with some of the amazing voice actors I worked with on The Way We Haunt Now.

Speaking of The Way We Haunt Now, as of TODAY it’s been six years since I released the first episode. Ahhh!

Do you know, I’ve never listened to the whole show, start to finish? (I mean, I’ve listened to all of it many times, but not as a listener). I’m remedying that this month. I’ll be listening to one episode a day and probably posting about it on bluesky. If you want to listen along, feel free to use #TWWHN in any posts you make.
On top of those milestones, it’s my birth month. If you enjoy my work and happen to feel like yelling about one of my stories or poems somewhere, that would be an excellent gift! Who knows, if enough people shout about it we might trigger a Higher Magic paperback. 🤩
What’s Up with My WIPs?
I’m still hard at work on project horror faeries, and to help sustain my momentum I commissioned this delightful character art from Corvid Arcana. The possum’s name is Poirot, and he’s my MC’s nuisance neighbor.

Aside from my novel, I have two novelettes or maybe novellas in the works. They’re both historical fantasy set in my magic embroidery universe (early subscribers may remember I have a novel to revise in this universe, too).
I’m also working on a short story that might be a novel in disguise.
I’ve been writing more poetry, as well. (In fact, I sold a piece to Strange Horizons and I’ll yell about that more when it has a pub date.)
This is a wild amount of WIPs, honestly. I typically do best as a monotropic writer (focusing on one thing at a time). Nurturing my process back from burnout has meant letting what happens happen, though, and it seems to be helping.
For my instant gratification art practice,1 I’ve also been learning to do colorwork knitting. This skull pattern by Stone Knits is my first attempt. It’s quite satisfying, and I’ll be very warm while I usher in spooky season.

I’ll leave you with some recent mushroom photos!

Instant relative to novel writing, that is. ↩
