Leominster film night and Birmingham libraries awareness walk

Hello walkers of the West Midlands,

This is a newsletter to tell you about a walking-themed film night in Leominster on Sat 11th May. The event is curated by our very own ...kruse and features work from several other Walkspace members.

We also have news of a creative walk to raise awareness of the plight of Birmingham's local libraries, also on 11th May. We'll be very impressed by anyone who shows up at both!

Walking Shorts | Leominster

Nine films explore a dizzying array of responses to walking and landscape, both urban and rural. From Rachel Henaghan's sensual, sensory delight, Elan, to Fiona Cullinan's witty, super-short Roadwords, from Andy Howlett’s engrossing Escarpment, to Kate Green’s musical Mindwalk.

In Andrew Howe’s Cinderloo we delve deep into history, Adele Mary Reed takes us on a visually delightful tour of Coventry whilst grappling with ideas about art and the commons. Fiona Cullinan shows us how it can be to walk as a woman in the world, …kruse takes a surprisingly eloquent pen for a walk, while Simon Jefferies’, WalkaDay is an upbeat celebration of walking and Walkspace.

Library Awareness Art Walk | Selly Oak

A consortium consisting of Stirchley Art Room, the Friends of Stirchley Library and Number 11 Arts are going to be holding the first in a series of Library Awareness Walks on Saturday 11 May.

Due to Birmingham City Council’s financial situation, drastic changes to the library service are being consulted on, at a time when public services are increasingly needed by its citizens. The plans could see cuts to as many as 25 of the 36 libraries operating in the city, with 11 remaining libraries being co-located with advice services and rebranded as Community Living Rooms.

On the Saturday there will be a walk between 3 out of the 4 libraries of the Selly Oak district. The walk will begin in Selly Oak, stop off at Stirchley, and finish in Druids Heath. There will be arts activities for all to get involved with along the way, including a banner-making workshop, a poetry-walk-maps workshop and readings and performances.

Meet 10:30am at Touchbase Pears, 750 Bristol Road, B29 6NA

Until next time,

Happy Walking!
