vverb's Plex Newsletter, March 2026
So funny story. Earlier today I was trying to fix an issue with the server's Tautulli configuration, and ended up having to completely reinstall it to fix the problem. But I learned in the process that Tautulli apparently has a newsletter feature. Obviously I haven't yet learned how it works, but I might look to migrating us over there, so I can save myself having to manually write the whole new media list every month. Also I think I fixed the configuration problem.
⚠️ Server Updates
- As noted above I updated our Tautulli to v2.16.1. This is irrelevant to everyone but me.

I continued my exploration of films of the early 20th century with The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, The Smiling Madame Beudet, and Modern Times, of which I'd most strongly recommend the latter. Modern Times is a surprisingly enduring send up of the capitalist drive to automate the worker. It's also a great slapstick comedy.
We also watched a couple of more recent horror films, Exit 8 and Good Boy. Both came to our attention through the "cleverness" of their premises: an adaptation of an indie walking simulator game, and a film from the perspective of a dog. Intriguingly, Exit 8 kind of works, despite being literally a film about walking down a hallway over and over. It's not going to be a modern classic or anything, but it adds an interesting layer to the conceit of the game, which is based on identifying idiosyncrasies in your environment in order to make decisions about your path. Transposed into a film, you get an added layer of dramatic irony with the capacity for the viewer to notice a warning sign that the character misses. (If I had more energy, I might dig a bit further into how this sits up against the experience of watching a video game streamer, which has over the past few years become an increasingly central mode of consuming horror video games, and has in this instance circled back around into the realm of traditional dramatic devices.) Good Boy is a fun film, largely just for the novelty of seeing a dog's affects and mannerisms made so central to the film. Otherwise it's a relatively pat story, which maybe gets away with a little more messiness to its story than it would if its protagonist were able to speak.
Finally, I rewatched the 2003 Genndy Tartakovsky—helmed Star Wars: Clone Wars, and wow Star Wars can be so many things. This show made me miss the more hand-driven animation style of this series compared to the computer animation of Dave Filoni's 2008 follow-up. It provides such a greater freedom of aesthetic expression and I have to say I'm not sure the things we got in the later Clone Wars were worth the trade off.
