The List
Short and sweet..
Last month, while I was still getting my feet wet as an ex-Twitter refugee on Bluesky when I saw the following thread. You should click on the image below and read the thread in it’s entirety,
but I’ll highlight a couple of my most favorite ones:
STEM graduates should be required to take liberal arts classes, especially history.
You should be able to charge businesses junk fees. On hold for 30 minutes? They pay you.
Home inspectors should be liable for errors in their inspections.
Middle/high school should all start after 9 am.
School lunches should be free.
We should teach people *why* things are, not just what they are.
Seemingly everything has been getting more difficult and more challenging. I truly mean everything - from the most basic house chores to the most advanced and complex projects whether at home or at work. There are literally dozen of drafts of essays that I’ve started here. There is a lot of critical events taking place around the world, on which I want to say a few things, from the “alleged” ceasefire in Gaza to the recent salvos of misogyny in the ongoing war on women, from LA fires to the Vichy Democrats. Alas, this one needs to be simple and easy. So today, while eating lunch I started to come up with my own list.
Here are the things I’ve thought about in the past. All seemingly very common sense items. Feel free to suggest additions or comment to argue inclusion of any of the below.
Universal Basic Income
I am not an economist, so I won’t argue from that perspective. However, look at what happened in the United States once the UBI-like government assistance programs for COVID were rolled back.
There should be no private K-12 schools.
There is plenty already written on this topic. It’s simple, make people with money fund public education so that they actually care about quality of it.
Critical Thinking, along with logic, reasoning, etc. should be required courses in the school.
As AI continues to claim more and more victims, one new horrific and very much expected challenge is that we are raising future generations that are incapable of reasoning, logic and critical thinking, because ChatGPT.
Best Practices and ways to identify and disregard propaganda and misinformation taught from pre-school.
Book bans (and burnings) are banned.
Very much self explanatory.
Stores that offer self-checkout, must offer discount for using my labor.
This is pure greed. Corporations wanted to increase profits and once it was available the self-checkouts lanes started to be used to decrease number of employees. Sorry, but if you are a business, I expect proper service. If you are outsourcing it to me, I should not be paying.
Voting should be mandatory and either take place on a weekend or be a national holiday.
Granted, this could backfire badly.
Get rid of the Daylight savings.
It’s long overdue.
There should be no restrictions on early voting, mail-in voting, etc.
There should be a platform which enables each person to save their settings, preferences, etc. when changing jobs.
There should be two separate airports or at least terminals. One for people who travel regularly and the other for casual travelers and newbies.
Elected public officials except the president can't have more than 2 aids paid by public funds.
Powerful people who break laws are held responsible, like in France or South Korea.
People understand the difference between what they like and what is objectively quality.
Whether it’s books, music, movies, art, etc.
No more Electoral college.
No QR menus.
People don't need any more encouragement to use phones.
Free healthcare.
4 day work week.
Free pre-K.
Non American version of tipping.
No publicly funded stadiums.
At retirement, at 67, you get normal livable adjustment to benefits.
No non-GMO bullshit while also no seed-monopolization.
No organic bullshit, at least not the way it is currently defined.
People actually doing their job like they care.
Vibrators come with a low battery indicator like phones.
And getting paid properly!
White color crimes get as much attention as all other crimes.
If you purchase a sharable piece of artistic work: movies, books, music, etc. you are guaranteed FREE access to the that work for life, regardless of changes to format.
What do you think?
