Your plain-English guide to what's happening at City Hall — Week of May 18, 2026
The Big Takeaway
If you live in Viroqua and have ever thought about adding a small apartment or in-law suite to your property, this is the week to pay attention. The Plan Commission is taking up a draft ordinance on accessory dwelling units (ADUs) — basically, smaller secondary homes on lots that already have a house. This could open the door for granny flats, garage apartments, or backyard cottages across the city. They're also holding a public hearing on a duplex proposal at 519 E. Decker Street and continuing work on the city's Comprehensive Plan, which will shape how Viroqua grows for years to come. If you have opinions about housing, density, or land use, Wednesday, May 20 at 5:00 PM is your meeting.[3]
Money Watch
The Public Works Committee has several payments and contract changes on the table for the Hanson Property development projects. They'll vote on Pay Request #6 for Contract A and both Change Order #1 and Pay Request #1 for Contract B, which covers the Railroad Storm Pond. Exact dollar amounts aren't listed in the agenda, but these are construction draws on infrastructure work already underway. The committee will also review the 2026 Water & Sewer budgets and forecast — worth watching if you're curious whether utility rates are tracking where the city expected them to be this year.[2]
Coming Up
Public Works Committee
Topics include a sewer interceptor capacity evaluation (the city is scoping out whether its main sewer lines can handle future growth) and construction updates. Join via Zoom[2]
Public Safety Committee
The big-ticket item: review and approval of all alcohol license renewals for the 2026–2027 license year, plus temporary licenses for Viroqua Legion Baseball and Softball events in June and July. They'll also prioritize the Public Safety capital improvement project list. Join via Zoom[1]
Plan Commission
Public hearing on the 519 E. Decker Street duplex and the ADU ordinance discussion. Also continued work on the Comprehensive Plan's future land use map and goals. Join via Zoom[3]
Sign Design Review Board
At the Fire Station (in person only, 911 Nelson Parkway). Five new sign applications on the docket.[4]
The Quick Rundown
Sewer interceptor study — Public Works will review the scope of services for evaluating whether the city's main sewer interceptor lines have enough capacity. This is the kind of unglamorous infrastructure homework that prevents very expensive emergencies down the road.[2]
2025 Consumer Confidence Report — The committee will approve the annual water quality report that gets sent to every household. If you've ever wondered what's actually in your tap water, this is the document.[2]
Alcohol license renewals — Every bar, restaurant, and liquor store in Viroqua needs its license renewed annually. The Public Safety Committee reviews the full list. Expect this to be routine unless there are complaints on file.[1]
Capital improvement priorities — Both Public Safety and Public Works are ranking their wish lists for future capital projects. These priority lists feed into budget decisions later this year.[1] [2]
New signs on Main Street — The Sign Board will review applications from Edward Jones, Neri Games and Toys, Unglaciated Energy Center, Valley Stewardship Network, and a property at 118 E. Jefferson Street. If you've noticed empty storefronts getting new life downtown, this is the paperwork catching up.[4]
One More Thing
Five new business signs in one meeting? That's a pretty healthy batch for downtown Viroqua — including what appears to be a new toy store on South Main (Neri Games and Toys at 110 S. Main). Something to look forward to.[4]
