Google Doubles Down on Anthropic With Up to $40B Bet

The signal: Google is planning to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, making it one of the largest AI infrastructure bets in history.

Why it matters: When one hyperscaler writes a $40B check to a model lab, it's not a partnership — it's an acquisition of strategic leverage. If you're building on top of Claude or any Anthropic API, your dependency stack just got a lot more complicated.

The pattern I'm watching: Every major foundation model is now tethered to a cloud giant — OpenAI to Microsoft, Gemini native to Google, Anthropic now deep in Google's orbit. The "neutral model provider" era is effectively over, and infrastructure lock-in is the new moat.

What I'd do with this: Audit your AI dependencies today — not tomorrow. If you're shipping products on a single model provider, build an abstraction layer now so you can swap without a rewrite when pricing or terms shift, because they will.
