Sprezztura #6 - Face Reveal!
Hello, friends!
This past Saturday I was part of an ensemble show for the Débark Festival at TSC. It was awesome to play with and meet a bunch of new (to me!) improvisers and old friends right here in my own backyard. Working online so much, it can be easy to feel isolated from the local scene. But this was a great way play and connect with some very funny people! Big congrats to the fest organizers and Theatre Ste Catherine.
SHORT STORY: "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas"
If you're not familiar with Ursula K. LeGuin, this is a great intro. A friend of mine was asking about her work and I recommended this short story. It's just five pages but it's stayed with me since I first read it. She's a wonderful fantasy author, best known for her Earthsea series.
MUSIC: Royel Otis, "Oysters In My Pocket"
I recently came across this Australian duo full of catchy pop songs. The bounce in their music is infectious and their latest EP, Sofa Kings, is perfectly airy/silly/playful. They put a spring in my step on these cool autumn days.

This is stupid and I love it.
IMPROV TIP
Start your scene with your face away from the audience. Make a moment out of turning to face them (don't wait too long!). Reveal something about your character in that moment, maybe an emotion or a secret.
Watch a movie and note the first time you see the main character's face. A good director/performer won't waste the chance to build up and make a first impression on the audience.
EVENTS
• Improv Teams
Well, you've got a day and some change left to register for our new improv teams. 10 weeks with some awesome teachers. Shows, workshops, and even a little festival in December to close things out. Details and registration are on our classes page.
• Learn Real Good Podcast
If you didn't know, I've got a podcast that combines science and comedy, called Learn Real Good. My partner, Katie, and I put together a season of 10 episodes and a new season (#4!) is about to launch this Friday! We share science facts and interview a real grad student doing cutting-edge research in a university. The goal is to make the conversation and science understandable to anyone, anywhere. You can find us anywhere you get your podcasts or on our host page at Podcavern. This Friday we talk with Rita Lam who examines the effect of windows on our gut biome (WHAT?).
