82 - Vince gives adVice? 🗣️
Hey there, !
Didn't get a lot of actual advice questions, but did get some re: the AMA callout from last week so I'll answer those instead :D
Will still keep this open, and monitor it for future posts!
How is your social media diet going?
-
Extremely badly. I finished reading Indistractable but it was not very actionable / useful unfortunately. Nir Eyal was good at writing how to make people addicted, but a lot worse at helping become lesss addicted. I had downloaded an app that would shut off usage of certain apps at particular times of the day (i.e. before I went to sleep) - I loved it when it worked (and it worked really well!), but the functionality was taken away for some reason after an update :( If anyone knows of an app like this please let me know!

I'm still a bit addicted to reddit / Instagram / Twitter (a new one for me), and I'm trying to replace it with new habits (e.g. gym) now. I think that's the best way to get around it unfortunately - just get addicted to something else.
-
NB: I mentioned this in a very early post, so always good to know people are still reading this LOL.
Best TV show you're watching right now?
-
I just finished watching WandaVision and Schitt's Creek - both great for their own reasons. WandaVision (and the currently running The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) have a lot of really interesting developments in a post-Blip world from Endgame. Schitt's Creek was a wonderful show, but it took until Season 3 for it to git gud (which I'm sad about because it turns people off really quickly).
-
Both are, as always, highly recommended :D
-
Also if you need WandaVision with Chinese subtitles (since Disney+ doesn't do them for some reason), my mum actually found a link with them (LOL) so let me know if you want it for your relatives hehe
What is the best yum cha dish and why is it chicken pie?
-
Well you know, chicken pie is just such a uniquely wonderful creation, filled with a creamy grey-ish sauce and flavourful chicken bits that you can really only get at yum cha, and I think it's jus-

How's Feleafcia doing?
- She's doing fine - thank you for asking! I'm keeping her alive, surprisingly, and we've had a few new leaves grow (albeit a little weak). May need to repot - we'll see!

Melbourne International Comedy Festival - though...it's not that international this year :D One of my favourite Melbourne events of the year - go see someone new! I've watched Michael Hing so far and will be seeing Daniel Sloss. A few others that I have seen in the past years (Aaron Chen, Adam Hills, Lawrence Leung) who have shows as well - any recommendations team?
-
NGV Triennial - If you have a chance to go before it closes in another 2 or 3 weeks - go! There's a lot of weird and wonderful things to see; everyone is there to see the big 'falling sand' screen out front - it's massive, it's beautiful, and the tech behind creating the video seems super cool (it uses a GAN to take meld colours from pictures with generative animations, creating some wonderful simulation art) - but there's more when you explore the rest of the gallery. Go find the room with the light up paintings - a cool mesh of digital and reality!

GPT-3 tries pickup lines - be careful, AI is moving into realms hitherto unknown. If anyone uses these pickup lines on you...well, I don't think they'll be very successful:
I’m losing my voice from all the screaming your hotness is causing me to do.
Do you like…pancakes?
My name is a complicated combination of 45 degrees of forward motion, 25 degrees of leftward drift, 75 degrees of upward acceleration, and infinity and that is the point where my love for you stops.
and my favourite:
I love you. I don’t care if you’re a doggo in a trenchcoat.

On the impracticality of a cheeseburger - how crazy is the concept of a cheeseburger? It seems super normal to us, but:
Further reflection revealed that it’s quite impractical—nearly impossible—to make a cheeseburger from scratch. Tomatoes are in season in the late summer. Lettuce is in season in spring and fall. Large mammals are slaughtered in early winter. The process of making such a burger would take nearly a year, and would inherently involve omitting some core cheeseburger ingredients. It would be wildly expensive—requiring a trio of cows—and demand many acres of land. There’s just no sense in it.
