46 - Change My Mind
Something I thought about from the last post:
I couldn't understand indie music for the longest time...It took me a long time, as well as infinite patience from a really good friend trying to slowly break me into it, to finally understand it.
It took a long time, but he was able to slowly change my mind and get me into things that he was really fascinated about. It got me thinking - what else do I kind of feel not that interested in or particularly fascinated by that I'm missing out on?
I came up with a list below - is there anything I should look into further? Why / how? Get me interested! Excited!
-
Philosophy - I have tried so hard with this one, but I have become bored too many times to continue. I could never understand the practical implications of it. If I know we live in a simulation, who cares? Does it matter? I know that I'm interested in thinking about thinking, but this was just...too abstract for me.
-
Dance - I like watching it, but I'm not really that excited to try it. I'm not very co-ordinated, so I don't think I'd be very good at it. Maybe I need to try a certain type? Or with certain types of music? Who knows.
-
Plants / Gardening - I know I have Feleafcia to dote upon, but it hasn't really expanded past that. What's there to be excited about? Please share your wisdom, green thumbs!
-
Record Players - like, why? Is the sound actually that much better? Or is it kinda just a nostalgia thing? Or should I be going all the way to the other side and investing in some hardcore Hi-Fi systems and 1GB FLAC files for every song I want to listen to? :D
-
Fashion - should I just watch that one scene from the Devil Wears Prada? I can't really understand, probably based on my upbringing, why so much time and money needs to be invested in it. What am I missing?!
If you think you got anything else interesting you want to bring up (except DotA 2), hit me up!

For Small Creatures Such As We by Sasha Sagan - I finally got around to reading this (thanks to my friends who gifted it to me!) and it's as wonderful as I thought. It's a really great breakdown of the different rituals we've had as human beings across the history of civilisation - rituals about summer, autumn, winter, spring, birth, death, marriages, sex, love, joy, coming of age - and some really vulnerable storytelling which I'm really into. Very worth a read!
-
R.J. Hamer Arboretum - Up in Olinda, this arboretum is a beautiful place with a whole bunch of different walking tracks. I went up there recently; it was painted with gorgeous fiery colours as we marched into winter; a few areas were kinda barren, but it's a relaxing place to be if you need to get away.

ChangeMyView - this is where I got the idea from; people post up their opinions, and award 'deltas' to anyone who is able to change their minds. Obviously, you have to have an open mind on what you're willing to hear evidence about, otherwise, what's the point, but it's really interesting to see people debate respectfully

8000 Years of Boardgame History in 43 Minutes - presented by one of my favourite boardgame reviewers (Shut Up & Sit Down), this one isn't for everyone. A fascinating exploration of how games have evolved over time!

COVID Futures - thought this might be interesting to people; a series being made by the Atlantic that looks into how certain areas of the world are changing because of COVID, and what changes might persist.
No Calathea Corner from now on! I'll find something new for this section soon :)
