305 - life update πŸ•πŸ€—πŸ¦€

life's so much better with high resolution iPhone pics

Hey there, !

A smattering of updates this week as it's late and I should have written this a lot earlier but I was away the whole long weekend. I know these deadlines are self-imposed but I do like being able to keep to them if I can. It's one of those like 'keep things sacred' rituals in my life, y'know?

Anyway, here we go:

  1. Went to Korea for a friend's wedding, and came back with a newfound love for Busan. Being a port city, it was a lovely parallel to Hong Kong which I also have a soft spot for - but the combination of seafood (raw octopus anyone?), a city perched on the mountain and the sea, and being so much calmer than Seoul just super attracted me. Had a LOT of food, and found a fantastic seaside temple called Haedong Yonggungsa which was incredibly pretty. Anyway, here are a few pics!

  2. Celebrancy is stalled a bit as I have deferred the course while I been busy - but I'm doing a lot in the background to prepare for when I start it up again. Always hard to get the motivation back but I'm determined!

  3. Pizzas I'm up to my 67th pizza now - the top I've tracked so far are Wine Salami with Hot Honey and then this new one I mentioned last week or week before - Zucchini and Prawn with a lemon zest and Fleur de Sel salt. Also, I made my first calzones over the long weekend (by necessity rather than anything else - see point 5 for more detail)...

  4. Friend catchups are really filling my cup. For example, a friend's 30th birthday CAKE PARTY (happy bday Laura!). Or an impressively high production Halloween!

  5. A getaway over the long weekend was just what the doctor ordered - beautiful and wholesome and lovely - but did unfortunately include a fight with a pizza oven that was too small, and did not keep heat well. I was FIGHTING FOR MY LIFE getting the heat built up in that damn oven - using a bike pump to try and get more oxygen in (in the process spreading ash all around), or spooning hot coals from a firepit into the oven to try and increase the heat. In the end, after a few okay pizzas, we made calzones and chucked them into a firepit to cook instead, which worked way better. But regardless of all that, look at the pretty iPhone pictures 😍

  6. As always, here's our favourite li'l munchkin Gandalf cuddling up as I came home from my getaway :D And then staring at the feeder waiting for food yet again...

Random additional note: the new iPhone has such high resolution photos that for the first time, the files became TOO BIG to upload on to my newsletter image uploader! I had to downscale them to make them fit - first world problems, I know.

Anyway I'm absolutely knackered so that's it for today - I'm sure I wanted to write a lot more, but I'm done.

βœ”οΈReal Life Recommendations

  1. The Roses - a solid 3.5 stars, with most of the stars shouldered by some phenomenal chemistry and acting from Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman. A story about a couple who navigate their evolving needs and wants over time, and the resentment that can build through these changes. Really fun dialogue, but the plot and writing left me wanting a bit more. Still recommended to see Benedict and Olivia go at each other with such gusto (as well as some hilarious Kate McKinnon scenes).

  2. Go touch some grass it's getting through Spring and into Summer; the mind just resets so well when you're in nature!

🚌 Adventures on the Information Super-Highway

  1. It's insulting to read your AI-generated blog post - kinda like sending 10+ min long voice messages on WhatsApp - is my time less valuable than yours?! At the same time, I'm implicitly asking you to read this whole newsletter...but at least you know I'm writing every single word in this hand-crafted, artisanal email newsletter content.

  2. If you don't tinker, you don't have taste - I loved this piece; it feeds directly into my mantra of trying to 'create, not consume'. The act of tinkering actually gives you the appreciation for how hard things are! And thus you can gain better taste of things by experiencing them first hand.

  3. 10M people watched a YouTuber shim a lock; the lock company sued him. Bad idea. - a fascinating example of the Streisand effect. Why you out here trying to sue lockpickers who post online about how shit your lock is??? Just make a better lock ffs.
