235 - life update ๐บ
Hey there, !
It's life update time :)
-
Back from Japan (and a few days off to rest), and we're back off to the races as work has ramped up ALL THE WAY. All those cherry blossoms are just memories blown away by the wind...
-
I'm looking after a friend's cat for the forseeable future - his name is Gandalf and he is goddamn HANDSOME. Look at him! I'm in my cat era and I'm learning all the fun cat things like - waking up early 'cos he's walking on my head, dealing with claws, cat fur EVERYWHERE, him being super hungry all the time and asking me for food (even though he just got fed!) - just normal cat things hehehe
-
I was able to get to a bunch of comedians before the MICF season finished when I got back from Japan - I triple-stacked one night just because I wanted to go ham on watching comedians while they were here! In all I watched Fern Brady, Jenny Tian, Sarah Keyworth (newest to me and bloody hilarious!), Nina Oyama (my own favourite pick!), He Huang (worst of the bunch unfortunately), Tom Gleeson (honestly getting a bit past his prime and getting a bit more conservative white man but the rage is still there which I absolutely love), and the Moosehead Benefit (which included a bunch of tight 5's from a bunch of top billers like Celia Pacquola, Guy Montgomery, Melanie Bracewell, Tommy Little, Tom Ballard etc.). Super fun, super great, support the arts <3 My own observation - Melbourne crowds were kinda low energy - might have been the end of the season but I was still surprised.

I'm still getting through the celebrant course - and interestingly we're learning about funeral celebrancy. I didn't think that it would come up in a wedding celebrancy course, but it's very interesting to learn about some of the rituals, symbols and beliefs about death from multiple cultural backgrounds. I feel like I'm taking a sub-course in anthropology while doing this - which I actually kinda love!
-
I'm still trying to search for balance - mainly for time. There are so many relationships and events and things I want to do, and there never seems to be enough time to do it all in. This might be a common refrain from me on these life updates, but I just wish I had way more time, keep my current lifestyle, do all the things that I want to do, travel where I want to, buy what I want...it's a lot to ask, I know, but it's nice to dream, hey?

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning: Part One - it's taken me so long to get around to this, and obviously I know that Mission Impossible is a great action movie franchise, but I was still surprised by how good the story was. The tech overlay was really cool - the AI and crypto stuff they included made it more up to date, which was a good touch. And seriously, Tom Cruise is just like...still going. Where did he get his youth from?! Highly recommended (though this is a very late recommendation LOL).

Where Should We Begin? - Esther Perel's podcast. She's a psychotherapist who does these sessions through a podcast format, and it's just...really fascinating to listen to. There's a voyeuristic pleasure to hearing the truth and vulnerability between couples and friends trying to get through a thorny issue (sometimes sex, sometimes friendship, sometimes fights), but more interesting for me is how well Esther can pick up on core issues and help them navigate through. She's able to just stop the conversation, or hone in on certain things, or ask for more embellishment that kind of lets the conversation flow even better than it was before. Really impressed by the skill. I was recommended this by MANY people who knew it would be up my alley, so if it sounds like something you'd like - go listen to it too!

A lathe made in a Japanese POW camp - a fascinating article on how they were able to build things in POW camps - my favourite part was that they worked out the word for 'workshop' in Japanese and then put it in front of the door during a guard change.

American Airlines keeps mistaking 101-year-old passenger for baby - insert meme of 'things that get mistaken for dates'.

Which word begins with "y" and looks like an axe in this picture? - it is a fascinating deep dive into how an AXE got put next to the letter Y...which is actually because of Swedish for Yxa.
